Heritage Park Exhibitions

The Painterly Quilt Anne Smith

To kick start 2012 we’ve two exciting exhibitions being launched at 2.30pm on Saturday 14th January to which you and your guests are invited.
The first exhibition comprises of colourful creations by Pontypridd-based ‘art-quilt maker’ Anne Smith who was the first British artist to win the prestigious biennial Quilt National competition in the USA.

Her quilt,
Calon Lan, inspired by the old Welsh hymn was judged Best of Show in 2009 out of almost 1,000 entries from all over America and 13 other countries. The quilt has toured the USA for two years and has arrived back from Ohio in time to be included in the exhibition.

Anne’s interest in textiles started at school, where she was the only student to study embroidery. Her interest has, over time, become a personal project called ‘The Painterly Quilt’, which involves a Fine Art approach to Craft. Her work is part planned, part improvised, combining the vitality and movement of abstract painting with the slow pace and craftsmanship of quilt making.

This touring exhibition, initiated by Cynon Valley Museum, was shown at the Interceltique Festival in Lorient in August 2011.

New Profile: Landscapes in Yarn Melissa Warren

Also being launched is a profile of work by textile artist and designer Melissa Warren who has lived and worked in the Rhondda Valley since 1990. She is constantly pursuing ideas to develop her passion for yarn and yarn manipulation in ways other than knitting.

Her current collection, mostly inspired by landscapes, has been created using yarn wraps, a technique which she particularly find accessible. Several pieces of Melissa Warren’s outdoor textile pieces were displayed as part of the Inside

Out sculptural exhibition at Rhondda Heritage Park last summer.

The exhibitions will be opened by 2012 Eisteddfod selector Gareth Griffiths. RSVP on 01443 682036 or email:  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

The Boys

The annual reunion of former Penygraig and Treorchy Boys Club players of yesteryear is set for Ton Pentre FC on Friday, December 2, 7pm.
2011 marks the silver anniversary of the event and there are always a few surprise visitors on these evenings that mark a golden era of 50's and 60's socccer.
However, a trio of stalwarts of the 25 years of soccer socialising have passed away in recent years; and, these sad losses must be acknowledged. Therefore, it is a fond farewell to Dai Conn, Davie John Roberts and John Davies who will be sadly missed by family and friends.
There are also special mentions to Clive Owens and Haydn Ivens who are a couple of old boys that are central to the organisation of the evening; and, on December 8 these long term friends both mark their 75th birthdays. For details of the 2011 get together call Clive on 01443 438385 or Haydn on 01443 436949.
